The first thing that came to mind when I saw the Lamborghini Murcielago was simply: Wow! Lamborghini's newest supercar is awesome by any standard. Its 205 mph top speed, and 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, are proof enough. While its design follows from the familiar Lamborghini layout, it is home to a wealth of new technology. Weighing in at 3638 lbs and powered by a 580 hp V12, the Murcielago is a worthy successor to the almighty Diablo. The Name As you are reading this, you must be wondering about the origin of the Murcielago's unique name. The story goes something like this: "Murcielago" was the name of a bull involved in a famous bullfight, in Cordoba, Italy, in 1879. After a fierce and courageous match, the matador (Rafael Molina "Lagartijo"), spared the bulls life. Such a rare honour is extended only to bulls that have shown tremendous courage and spirit during the fight.
The Murcielago follows from the more familiar Lamborghini layouts: a twelve-cylinder engine mounted in the middle of the car, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission and permanent all-wheel drive system. This format provides an excellent front-to-rear weight ratio, high-speed stability, and excellent corner. More so than its predecessors, the Diablo and Countach, the Murcielago features a very smooth and clean design free of excess badging and body-side mouldings. The Powertrain The 60-degree V12 engine produces 580 hp at 7,500 rpm and 480 lb-ft torque at 5,400 rpm. The high-strength, lightweight alloy block sits lower in the chassis for a lower center of gravity. Sophisticated electronics such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT), a Variable-Geometry Intake System (VIS), and a Variable Air-Flow Cooling System (VACS), allow the engine to generate power at much lower speeds and pass the strictest emissions standards.
Comfort and style have benefited from numerous improvements in the cockpit of the Murcielago. Instruments are clear, simple, and accurate. Controls are positioned in an easy to access position to allow the driver to remain focused on the road ahead. Leather upholstery wraps around the sides of the occupants keeping them tucked tightly into the seat when cornering hard. Getting in and out of the vehicle has been made easier, thanks to an improved gull-wing door design. Optimized sound proofing materials and a premium sound system make the vehicle acoustically pleasing. The Price Unfortunately, at $410,000 (MSRP), the Murcielago falls well beyond most of our budgets, but if you are fortunate enough to win a state or provincial lottery, you will love this vehicle. Hell, I will love you too if you take me for a spin! |
